Asokwa Municipal District

 

Asokwa Municipal District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana.

Originally it was a sub-metropolitan district council within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly until 15 March 2018, when it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Asokwa Municipal District.

The municipality is located in the Kumasi Metropolitan District of the Ashanti Region and has Asokwa as its capital town

 

Asokwa is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

The constituency was first created in 2004 by the Electoral Commission of Ghana along with 29 other new ones, increasing the number of constituencies from 200 to 230.

Infrastructure

Asokwa Municipal District is home to the beautiful Asokwa Interchange. The project was jointly financed by the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) of France and the Government of Ghana.

The estimated funding of the project was GH¢27.5 million. It involves the construction of a two-lane carriageway at the Oforikrom-Asokwa by-pass and improve the road network on the Lake Road.

The interchange also increase capacity at intersections, improve traffic operations, increase pavement strength and enhance the safety of pedestrians and other road users. It is the missing link of the 17 kilometre inner ring road network in the Kumasi metropolis

Sports Venue

Baba Yara Sports Stadium (also Kumasi Sports Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in Kumasi, Ashanti. It is Ghana’s largest stadium, with a seating capacity of 40,528.

The Kumasi Stadium is used mostly for football matches, although it is also used for athletics. It is the home of one of Africa’s most popular sports clubs, Asante Kotoko as well as King Faisal.

The stadium was originally built by the United African Company (UAC) in 1957 and inaugurated as a designated football pitch in 1959.

The first stands were constructed in 1971. The stadium was rebuilt in 1977. It was renamed after Kumasi-born footballer Baba Yara under the New Patriotic government in 2004.

1978, 2000 and 2008 African Cup of Nations
The stadium hosted 6 group matches and one of the semi final matches of the 1978 African Cup of Nations tournament. During the 2000 African Cup of Nations, the stadium hosted 7 matches. It was later used for the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

 

Kumasi City Mall

The Kumasi City Mall is a shopping mall located in Asokwa. It is the first of its kind in the city. The Kumasi City Mall cost $95 million and took 24 months to complete. Kumasi City Mall provides a convenient and highly accessible shopping destination to the entire city.

The tenant mix caters for the broadest possible sector of the market. The mall is one of the biggest malls in West Africa. The property is owned by Delico Kumasi Limited, which is a fully owned subsidiary of Delico property investment Ghana limited, the same group that owns the Achimota Retail center and is the Majority shareholder of West Hills Mall in Accra.
